2012 Apex
The 2012 Apex is newly updated with a rockered tip, but retains the sturdy, 2 sheets of metal wood core construction that has made this ski such a classic. It is a money ski for anyone looking for a true all-mountain ride, yet someone who needs a narrower ski, either for edge hold, quickness, or simply doesn't get to ski a lot of deep new snow (like those that live on the Ice Coast), yet doesn't want to be burdened with an aggressive carver that is a handful in challenging conditions. The Apex is a very well-rounded ski. It rips bumps: super smooth, predictable, not too much sidecut, nice tail release. Also, it is a very good big-turn carver on groomers: the 2 sheets of metal really hook up when asked to. It has a GS feel, but as is only moderately stiff, can be bent into smaller arcs as well. The rockered tip gives it quickness in steeps, and you can just pivot around on that tip if you need to make quick turns and know how to use your feet well. Very fast from edge set to edge set. In crud, there are few skis that can out-do the Apex: it combines smoothness and stability with an ease of use that will blast through most anything. Soft snow float is also quite good, although if it deeper than 10-12" of new, you may want a wider ski. Overall, though, this is the ski for varied off-piste adventures; especially if you are looking for smoothness, stability, and just a bit of energy. It is suitable for skiers of advanced to expert levels. Flex is medium, and it is not overly demanding.
